David Oyelowo Leadership Scholarship for Girls
Nigeria has approximately 20 million children out-of-school, 60% (over 12 million) of whom are girls. This is the highest number in Africa and behind only India worldwide.
A frightening majority are young female victims of terrorism and gender inequality:
– Girls who have been kidnapped and mercilessly abused by Boko Haram and other violent groups
– Girls who have been orphaned through senseless violence
– Girls who are left uneducated simply because they are girls and are therefore deemed by too many to be of little intrinsic value
Creating Hope
We, however, deem each and every girl in Nigeria to be of incalculable value, and our special scholarship is dedicated to their success and wellbeing.
We identify girls suffering in the most challenging socio-economic circumstances, but who nevertheless have a spark of intelligence, verve, and leadership potential that need only be kindled in order to fully ignite. Once selected, we provide our girls with six years of tuition, room & board, healthcare, leadership training, extracurricular STEM education, and menstrual and mental health support.

Our Scholars … In their own words

Before 2019, my parents struggled a lot to provide basic needs for I and my brothers. We missed school a lot, had bad grades, and eventually we all had to drop out and start attending a public school. This scholarship gave me the opportunity to have high-quality education, as well as all round development. In addtion, my parents can now save money to send my brothers to a better school and provide for their educational needs.
Chidiogo Vivian (Leadership Scholar)

I was on the verge of being withdrawn from school, and after my mother lost her job, my parents struggled with paying school fees for all four of their children. So receiving this leadership scholarship program was a huge relief. I now have the opportunity to attend and excel in the school of my dreams. Words are not enough to express my gratitude to David Oyelowo and the GEANCO Foundation.
Juliet Bede (Leadership Scholar)

Before I became a leadership scholarship recipient, my parents found it difficult to keep up with paying my school fees every term. Now, they can focus on my younger sibilings. Most importantly, this program has helped me self-develop while ensuring I receive the best education possible.
