The inspiring story of Bilkisu Luka, GEANCO's first David Oyelowo Leadership Scholar.

At a time when maternal mortality in Nigeria remains among the highest in the world — with one woman dying every seven minutes in childbirth — one organization is helping to rewrite the story of women's and family health.

Sitting at the intersection of women's empowerment, health equity and education access, Geanco is an organization that has spearheaded a global health breakthrough, providing critical health care for women all over the world.

Afam Onyema, the Geanco CEO, director and co-founder, joined "Your Morning" to discuss the Geanco Foundation as it both saves and transforms lives.

GEANCO's STEM Leadership Summits, branded "Future Ready STEM Summit for Girls", were held across three locations (Abuja, Ibadan and Enugu) in 2024. We provided an enriching platform to inspire and empower young minds in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The Summits created awareness, kindled curiosity & critical thinking, and sparked keen interest in STEM career fields among students.

For the first time in GEANCO's medical mission’s history, all surgeries were performed by experienced local surgeons, some of whom were alumni of GEANCO’s laparoscopy training program. This mission demonstrated the success of our capacity-building initiatives and the ability of local talent to deliver high-quality surgical care.

A total of 78 surgeries were successfully completed within 10 non-consecutive days. The procedures included herniorrhaphy, hydrocelectomy, thyroidectomy, excision biopsy, vaginal hysterectomy, myomectomy, and cystectomy, among several others.

In January 2025, actor & leadership scholarship co-founder David Oyelowo and his wife Jessica, a musician & actress, traveled with us to Nigeria for GEANCO's first Creative Arts Summit for girls.

Our scholars gathered from around the country for workshops and programs focused on writing, acting, music, painting, photography, choreographed dance, and the digital arts.

This video highlights our May 2024 inaugural Mental Health Summit for Teens, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria and was keynoted by Prince Harry & Meghan Markle.

August 14, 2024: STEM Day at the GEANCO Community Center in Anambra State included:
- 6 interactive workshops on Drone Assembling, Artificial Intelligence,
Robotics/Internet of Things, Solar Power, Virtual Reality and 3D Printing.
- A career panel featuring experts from various STEM fields.

- Quiz competition to reinforce learning and engagement.

David Oyelowo visited KTLA in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 5, 2023 to talk about our Leadership Scholarship for Girls!

In this joyous, inspiring video, Brightland Academy's students and staff celebrate the new library funded by International Thrillers Writers and the GEANCO Foundation in the summer of 2023.

We are excited to build a new library for our partner school Brightland Academy in Enugu, Nigeria. It will be THE best, most well-stocked in the region once it’s ready this fall. Entire project was funded and stocked by our dear friends, International Thriller Writers!

In November 2022, Dr. Kevin El-Hayek, Dr. Veronica Sullins, Dr. Bipan Chand and Nurse Cherese Lofton and a team of Nigerian surgeons and anesthesiologists performed 52 procedures on 33 patients in 4.5 days (34 hernia procedures, 4 OB/GYN, 9 pediatric, 24 adult surgeries, 2 adhesion surgeries). They also provided hands-on laparoscopic surgery training and gave lectures to 28 Nigerian surgeons and doctors who traveled from all over the country to participate. Total financial value of surgeries & training was over $175,000.
